Group at Deer Park Buddhist Center

Program Description:

Traverse the diverse ecological and spiritual landscape of the Himalayas, the Indus River Valley, the Ganges River and the birthplace of three major world religions. Experience how these diverse belief systems live and work side-by-side as you, too, live and work alongside them. Challenge yourself as you learn Hindi and Tibetan and volunteer with your group at the Mother Teresa Home for the Destitute, witness first-hand the burning ghats of Varanasi, trek through the mighty Himalayas, and participate in a yoga ashram retreat. Home stays, including one near the home of the Dalai Lama, will push you to engage further with one of the most dynamic cultures in the world. Individual learning opportunities will also give you the chance to personally explore your interests in the arts, music, language, yoga, and meditation. Compare and contrast life in the country as well as the city, and as you hone the skills of an independent traveler, help design the Free Travel portion of the semester to discover some of India’s hidden treasures. Our India study abroad semester will challenge and enrich you beyond your wildest imagination as you better understand and appreciate this country’s history, diversity, challenges, and position in today’s global society. College credit and financial aid (FAFSA) are available through Portland State University.

Reviews:

"Carpe Diem was the most fantastic gap year program!! I attended the India semester, and the group was wonderful, the leaders very supportive, and the itinerary was incredibly ideal. The amount of time spent in each location was never too long or too short, and I learned so much from my three months with Carpe Diem. It's the best! Could not have asked for a better semester in India."

"Really awesome program! Great cultural immersion and a wide range of experiences. Participated in homestays, internships, volunteer work. Himalayan trek was a highlight. Good deal of time spent traveling, as we didn't spend more than a week in one place. Learned about many different aspects of Indian culture - dress, cooking, religious customs and ceremonies, personal philosophies, etc. I learned a great deal about myself from the Carpe Diem program. My group was amazing and I learned to deepen my interpersonal and social skills. Highly recommended! India is wild, but you can really have a life-changing experience. "
