Discover the World of Communication

Program Description:

In the Discover the World of Communication program students will have the opportunity to build a portfolio of photographs, script and shoot a film, write a news story like a pro, speak with confidence, lobby for the environment or broadcast the weather. Our professional, hands-on workshops—open to students entering grades 9 through 12—are taught by American University School of Communication faculty and communication professionals.

During class and after hours, students will experience D.C. from a variety of angles: an editorial meeting at the Washington Post, a press seat at a Nationals game, behind the scenes at NBC 4, the Newseum, or the American Film Institute—to name a few.

Students may register for a two, three or four week session, living on campus or commuting from home. Classes run Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to noon and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Each evening and on weekends students will explore the city guided by our wonderful Teaching Assistants and Resident Assistant, current students in American University’s School of Communication.

Visit our website—audiscover.org—for information about other opportunities, including DWC in the Wild, our three-week environmental film program in Costa Rica.
